Shaping the energy transition in the property sector: BUWOG becomes a member of the Open District Hub e.V.

In the scope of its sustainability agenda, BUWOG Bauträger GmbH will be involved in the Open District Hub as of 1 March 2020, seeking to further expand the transfer of knowledge for sustainable, innovative neighbourhoods. The building sector is a significant factor in achieving the climate targets, as around 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions are generated within it.

Developing future-oriented projects in cooperation

Eva Weiß, managing director of BUWOG Bauträger GmbH:

"Within our development pipeline in Germany of approximately 12,000 apartments that are under construction or in planning, we are consistently improving the sustainability of our new construction projects, for example within the framework of functioning smart city solutions. In sustainable neighbourhoods, it is important to combine ecological qualities and social functions with innovative technologies that ensure both resource-saving and economical operation throughout the entire lifecycle of a property. As a builder and developer of urban neighbourhoods, we are interested in developing future-oriented projects in cooperation with partners of the Open District Hub e.V.".

14 founding members from industry and research

Under the auspices of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Open District Hub e.V. association was initiated in 2018 by 14 founding members from industry and research. In the meantime, 35 member companies from the real estate and energy industry as well as the fields of building automation, consulting and research are involved. The aim is to develop safe, ecological and economical solutions for smart, sustainable neighbourhoods that are oriented toward the needs of the user community. To this end, the network is initiating nationwide pilot neighbourhoods.

Dr. Karsten Schmidt of Ampeers Energy GmbH and vice chairman of the Open District Hub e.V.:

"In the coming years for smart districts, we aim to test a variety of components for sector coupling in pilot neighbourhoods and to make them viable in practical application. The fact that specialist in functioning neighbourhoods BUWOG Bauträger GmbH is contributing its expertise here is an enormous benefit for us".

Share of apartments with renewable energy sources will be increased

Our involvement in the Open District Hub e.V. is part of BUWOG Bauträger GmbH's sustainability initiative. The objectives sought here apply to the entire business of new construction in Germany and are reviewed by means of continuous monitoring as part of the certified energy management system (EnMs) in accordance with ISO 50001. By 2023, the share of apartments with renewable energy sources will be increased to at least 35 percent. At the same time, people in the new housing developments will find it easier to switch to electric cars and e-bikes: the proportion of parking spaces with their own electric charging station will be increased to at least 12 percent. The results can be seen, for example, in Berlin-Grünau in the Treptow-Köpenick district, where the quarter 52° Nord with around 1,000 rental apartments, condominiums and a daycare centre will be built by 2024. A combined heat and power plant generates local heat with a primary energy factor of zero. The heart of the quarter is a 6,000 sqm water basin. Rainwater from surrounding houses flows into it and is cleansed biologically by aquatic and riparian vegetation as well as substrate filters. This project is scientifically supported by the TU Berlin.

BUWOG now looks back on 69 years of expertise in the residential property business. In Germany BUWOG Bauträger GmbH is currently focused on Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig in the area of property development and has a development pipeline of around 12,000 residential units. BUWOG is a subsidiary of Vonovia SE, Europe's leading residential company, which is located in Bochum (Germany).
